For decades, much of the research on Alzheimer’s disease focused on the hypothesis that the accumulation of beta-amyloid plaques was the primary cause of cognitive decline. This theory guided thousands of scientific studies and influenced the development of various therapeutic approaches around the world.

However, as we examined more recent research, we found references to studies suggesting that this explanation alone may not be sufficient to account for every case of cognitive decline. One of the main arguments presented is that beta-amyloid plaques may represent a consequence of the neurodegenerative process rather than its initial cause.

Among the researchers referenced is Dr. Yoshinori Osumi, a Japanese scientist trained at the University of Tokyo, whose line of investigation is presented as one of the foundations of this emerging perspective. His research explored biological mechanisms that could begin acting long before the changes traditionally associated with Alzheimer’s disease become apparent.

Another point that caught our attention was the epidemiological data presented, which showed a significant increase in Alzheimer’s cases between the 1970s and the 1990s. The hypothesis proposed is that factors such as population aging and genetics alone may not be sufficient to explain this increase, suggesting that environmental factors could also play an important role.

Another study that drew considerable attention was conducted in Okinawa, Japan, a region internationally recognized for its exceptionally high concentration of centenarians. Researchers analyzed dietary habits, lifestyle, and foods regularly consumed by the elderly population in an effort to identify factors associated with preserving memory and cognitive function during aging.

Another relevant aspect was the support provided by the Gates Foundation (Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation) for research investigating new hypotheses related to cognitive decline, including a randomized, double-blind clinical trial involving approximately 9,300 volunteers, conducted in collaboration with the National Institute on Aging and the Alzheimer’s Association. The findings from these studies served as part of the foundation for the approach presented later.

Based on this combination of scientific studies, epidemiological observations, and research findings, the analysis presents a different explanation for cognitive decline.

According to these studies, a microscopic organism known as Toxoplasma gondii may gradually impair communication between neurons, reduce the production of acetylcholine, and contribute to the development of symptoms associated with memory impairment. From this perspective, cognitive decline would no longer be explained solely by the accumulation of beta-amyloid plaques but would instead be viewed as the consequence of a biological mechanism that may begin long before the first symptoms appear.
